Title: Momentum - The ATL Express

The wings of Greek and Roman gods have inspired many transportation related icons. Cycles, automobiles, rapid transit and rail lines, aircraft and aerospace have all utilized winged symbols in some fashion through the years. They represent agility, flight and freedom, and love of travel. Momentum - The ATL Express draws its initial inspiration from these early symbols while discarded parts and pieces become its creation.

An industrial spool adorned with rail spikes transforms into wings reminiscent of countless icons of the open road. Signage pulled from an aluminum recycling bin, a discarded character from a closed Atlanta business; however, flaking layers of paint give way to a bright metal finish beneath. An auto grill, typical carnage littering Georgia Highways completes and complements the "A". A child's toy marbles represent the many parks and neighborhoods connected through the Beltline. Hammered and fastened aluminum cans simulate aero wings or early transport manufacturing standards. A bicycle wheel spokes and hub has all the shape and feel of the beltline itself and represents a healthy mode of transportation the beltline should help promote. The emerald electric insulator represents the power and connectivity to come from this project.

The future of Atlanta, commerce, smart residential and commercial development, recreational health and fitness, environmentally friendly transportation and connectivity are all represented by this icon. How nice it will be to abandon the current congested polluted rat-race commuter model for something less sophisticated, environmentally friendlier, and healthier, from our past? Walking, biking, trolley cars, this piece celebrate that new age yet to come.
